What is the Marathon Jam?
Every year across several states and around the world, musicians gather and play bluegrass music for twelve straight hours to raise money for Fisher House (www.fisherhouse.org), an organization that supplies room and board to the families of American soldiers recovering in Virginia hospitals far away from their hometowns. Each year these sessions have donated thousands of needed dollars to Fisher Houses across the country. We will be holding our 2nd Annual Marathon Jam this year in Richmond to support the local Fisher House located at the McGuire VA Medical Center.
The Marathon Jam began a few years ago, created by author and musician John Santa as a way to give back to our soldiers and veterans. In 2010, it grew far beyond its local roots, with Marathon Jams held in simultaneously in several cities across the United States and around the world, including active-duty soldiers stationed in Iraq and Afghanistan. Last year’s Jam in Richmond drew well over a thousand guests (including some surprise visits from distinguished supporters!) and many great bands and musicians, all of which created an amazing atmosphere of great music, great food, and most importantly, great support for our military men and women. Through generous donations of time and money that day, we were able to raise $6000.00 of which EVERY PENNY was given to The Richmond Fisher House in support of their work.
Come, have a great time and help us make this another great year for the Richmond Marathon Jam!
How can I get involved?
As a musician…a sponsor…or a fan
First, help us spread the word! Pass along this information to those that you feel would want to contribute to the cause in any way…we need volunteers, sponsors, and bluegrass music fans!
Musicians – there will be time for open jams as well as bands that want to play a few tunes! We’re making a few tweaks to last year’s format to make this year even more fun for those that want to bring their instruments and play for the cause!
East of Afton is asking any and all bluegrass pickers, sponsors and fans who might be interested in supporting the Richmond Marathon Jam to please contact Brian Sullivan at email@example.com or 804-929-4102. He’ll give you all the details.
The dream is to have Marathon Jams happening at the same time and same day around the world! Please help spread the word about Fisher House and support the families of our brave service men and women.
We look forward to seeing you there!
