Background

By providing cost-free living quarters for patient families, the Fisher House provides an immeasurable benefit to patient care, in addition to the care and well-being of our veterans’ family members.

The Richmond Fisher House opened on the campus of the Central Virginia VA Health Care System on July 21, 2008, at a cost of $5.8 Million. The Fisher House was made possible by the leadership and generosity of Richmond business and civic leaders, led by William C. Boinest, Chairman of Craigie, Inc., and by the national Fisher House organization.

Over 2,000 families have been our guests since opening. Having family members nearby provides significant benefits and advantages to patient treatment, rehabilitation and recovery. This beautiful facility provides lodging to the families of veterans receiving treatment at the Central Virginia VA Health Care System hospital, at no cost.

Fisher House II

Ground was broken on September 26, 2018 for a new Fisher House at the Central Virginia VA Health Care System.

This home will provide lodging for an additional 20 families of veterans and military at no cost, allowing them to be close to their loved ones at the most stressful time – during their hospitalization.

This will bring the total number of families served by Fisher House at Richmond VAMC to 40 a night, savings to military and veterans’ families more than $1.4 million a year.
